A new inertial sensing paradigm based on weakly coupled resonators


Weakly coupled resonators (WCRs) have demonstrated several interesting phenomena such as eigenvalue loci veering, energy confinement, mode localization. This talk will review more interesting phenomena of WCRS such as anti-resonance loci, mode interaction, quantization of the mode localization. Based on these phenomena, a new inertial sensing paradigm is proposed and discussed. The sensitivity, linear sensing range, and the closed loop control scheme will be presented in this talk.

Short Bio

Honglong Chang (IEEE Senior Member) received his B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. from Northwestern Polytechnical University (NPU), Xi’an, China, in 1999, 2002, and 2005, respectively, all in mechanical engineering.

From 2011 to 2012, he was a Visiting Associate (Faculty) with the Micromachining Laboratory, California Institute of Technology, Pasadena, CA, USA. He is currently a Professor with the Ministry of Education Key Laboratory of Micro and Nano Systems for Aerospace, NPU, where he is also the Head of the Department of Microsystems Engineering. He has authored over 51 international journal papers (including 8 JMEMS papers) and over 34 international conference papers (including 18 IEEE MEMS & Transducers papers) in the microelectromechanical systems field. He was a recipient of the Transducer 2015 Outstanding Paper Nominee Award and the MEMS 2016 Outstanding Paper Award.
